Remembrance Sunday commemorations

From the poignant sound of a lone piper before dawn to a candlelit procession at night, Norwich Cathedral joined communities across the city in marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with a day of special events.
The Remembrance Sunday commemorations began at 6am with lone piper Dave Harper playing Battle's O'er by the West Door, echoing the sound of pipers across the world taking part in Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute.
Scores of people gathered to watch the moving performance before lighting candles on the Cathedral's Peace Globe.
As the day progressed, the War Memorial outside City Hall became the focus for a further act of remembrance and huge crowds gathered to pay their respects to those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.
From here a parade of veterans and members of the armed forces marched to the Cathedral for the annual Remembrance Sunday service at 11.40am.
As night fell, hundreds of people gathered at the Cathedral once again for a Service of Light which culminated in a candlelit procession through Norwich's streets to City Hall where one final event drew the day's commemorations to a close.
Several hundred people, each clutching a candlelit lantern, gathered by the city landmark for the Vigil of Peace which included the lighting of a beacon ahead of church bells ringing across the city and beyond in celebration of peace.
Remembrance commemorations are continuing throughout November at Norwich Cathedral.
People can dedicate a cross to a lost loved one in the Cathedral’s Field of Remembrance in the Cloister Garth until November 16.
Three art installations are also running until the end of the month.
Visitors can walk through A Curtain of Poppies into the Cathedral’s military chapel, St Saviour’s Chapel, and the stories of 11 specific soldiers linked to the Cathedral and Norwich School are remembered as part of the There But Not There installation.
A display of 100 Hearts tells tales of comradeship and bravery through the artistry of stitch.
