Cathedral recruiting for two new posts as part of exciting new musical chapter
16 Jan 2025

Two exciting opportunities for talented musicians have been announced as Norwich Cathedral looks ahead to a new chapter in its musical life.
The Cathedral is currently recruiting for the new position of Assistant Master of Music and Sub-Organist as well a second position of Assistant Organist to start in September 2025.
The two new posts will join Master of Music Ashley Grote in leading the Cathedral’s wonderful music after the Cathedral community bids farewell to current Organist, David Dunnett, who will be retiring in summer 2025 after an incredible 29 years, first as Organist and Master of Music (1996-2007) and since 2007 as Organist.

The new posts also come at a time of significant development, with a major rebuild of the 102-stop pipe organ recently being completed and the future of choral music at the Cathedral now being expanded to allow more opportunities for girls and boys alike from ages six to 18.

Master of Music Ashley Grote said: “This is a particularly exciting time in the musical life of Norwich Cathedral, with the recent changes to our choirs and the completion of the project to rebuild our Cathedral organ.
“David Dunnett has been an outstanding colleague and served the cathedral with great distinction for nearly thirty years.
“We are now looking for a talented and ambitious musician who will play a key role in the years ahead as Assistant Master of Music and Sub-Organist, as well as for an Assistant Organist who will be eager to gain experience in the cathedral music world.”

Assistant Master of Music and Sub-Organist
The new Assistant Master of Music and Sub-Organist role is a brand new post for an outstanding organist and team player who will help the rich musical life of the Cathedral to continue to flourish.
They will be principal accompanist to the Cathedral Choir and will direct both the Senior Girls’ Choir and the Cathedral Chamber Choir.
The deadline to apply for this position was Friday 31 January 2025.

Assistant Organist
The Assistant Organist position is for an initial two-year fixed term, with the possibility of extending this at the discretion of the Dean and Chapter, and is intended to provide an exciting opportunity to a talented and ambitious organist keen to pursue a career in Cathedral or Church music. As well as playing the organ for Cathedral services, the Assistant Organist will also assist with the training and direction of the Cathedral Choirs.
The deadline to apply is Friday 14 February 2025.
