Dementia Darnings
09 Mar 2023 - 01 Apr 2023
Location: Hostry
A series of incredibly detailed stitched portraits of the artist’s mother, Gladys, documenting her life from childhood to death, with dementia.
"The Dementia Darnings developed from my mother’s interest and joy in looking through family photo albums.
She was diagnosed with dementia in 2011 and, as my role as carer increased, it seemed only possible to continue my art practice by making her the subject of my work.
I developed the images in a way similar to making a cross hatched drawing, by sewing through fine bobinette netting stretched over a canvas. It is a slow, meditative process, each one can take up to four or five months to
complete."
Artist Jenni Dutton
The Dementia Darnings have travelled extensively in the UK and Europe and a selection reached China in 2018.
The Dementia Darnings exhibition runs from Thursday 9 March to Saturday 1 April and is open 9.30am-4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-3pm on Sundays. Entry is free.
The Dementia Darnings is brought to Norwich Cathedral by The Forum, and is part of the Norfolk Makers Festival.
