Choristers

Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir has traditionally offered places to 20 boys aged 8-13, all of who receive generous scholarships to attend Norwich School in the Cathedral Close, with means-tested bursaries available to ensure no child is excluded on financial grounds.

From September 2024, we are delighted to being opening this opportunity up to girls aged 8-13 also.

What’s Involved?

Life as a chorister not only provides the opportunity for a first-class musical education but also teaches life skills such as teamwork, time management and the ability to perform at a professional level.

Alongside their primary duty of singing for daily worship at Norwich Cathedral, the choristers also benefit from the experience of singing in Cathedral concerts, on radio and television broadcasts, making commercial recordings and travelling away from Norwich for concert performances and international tours.

The choristers rehearse each morning before school and sing Choral Evensong on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5.30pm and usually two services on a Sunday. They play a full role in the worship at Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. The summer holiday is usually free of any choir commitments.

Applying

The Cathedral’s Master of Music, Ashley Grote, is always pleased to hear from parents of children aged six to eight years old who may be interested in joining the Cathedral Choir. Enquiries are welcomed from children of all educational and financial backgrounds. The qualities we look for at this first stage are a clear voice, a good musical ear, a love of singing and an eagerness to learn. No prior training or experience is necessary or expected. For more information and to arrange an informal visit, please contact the Choir Administrator.
