A special celebration of Julian of Norwich took place at Norwich Cathedral as part of the city-wide festival celebrating the 650th anniversary of Julian of Norwich experiencing her famous visions from God – known as shewings - in May 1373.
Writer Claire Gilbert – author of the new book I, Julian – was joined by actor Jeremy Irons and the Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Dr Andrew Braddock, for the sold-out talk Julian of Norwich: mother, mystic, radical which was enjoyed by about 150 people on Sunday 14 May.
Meanwhile many more people gathered for the special Festal Evensong dedicated to Julian of Norwich that took place later that day and included the Bishop of Norwich reading a Papal Blessing from Pope Francis to all who were joining in the Julian celebrations.
The Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Dr Andrew Braddock, said: “The significance of Julian of Norwich as writer, mystic and prophet for our own times was a constant theme of our celebratory weekend.
“From the stimulating conversation between Jeremy Irons and Claire Gilbert to the greetings from Pope Francis, we were reminded of Julian’s legacy and its enduring message of hope, love and unity.”
The Julian 650 festival is led by the Julian of Norwich Partnership.
