Memorial stone for Bishop Timothy Dudley-Smith to be dedicated at Evensong

A memorial stone for Bishop Timothy Dudley-Smith is to be dedicated at Norwich Cathedral on Sunday 22 March.

Bishop Dudley-Smith served as Archdeacon of Norwich from 1973 to 1981, and then as Bishop of Thetford until his retirement in 1991; he died in Cambridge in August 2024.

He held a lifelong commitment to the church’s mission, serving latterly as president of the Evangelical Alliance. A love of poetry led to hymn-writing, of which he became one of the Anglophone church’s best-known practitioners of recent years.

He left a legacy of over 450 hymns, perhaps the most famous of which is ‘Tell out, my soul’, whose words appear on the memorial.

The stone will be dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich during Evensong at 3.30pm on Sunday 22 March.
