NCCL: Jesus in Matthew’s gospel - the fulfiller of the law?
09 May 2026, 10:00 - 12:30
Location: Library

We will start with a survey of the shape of the gospel as a whole and touch on Matthew’s major themes, noting how he adapts and expands one of his major sources, the gospel of Mark. We will then use the Sermon on the Mount to examine how Matthew presents Jesus’ teaching, and to discuss some puzzling aspects: how is it that Matthew seems both the most Jewish of the gospels and at times one of the most anti-Jewish? What is Jesus’ attitude to the Torah? Through our discussions on these and other questions in the course of the morning we will gain a sense of the distinctive aspects of the gospel - what makes Matthew Matthean.
