Bishop Shute Barrington (1734-1826), whose 200th anniversary of death is celebrated this year, was the penultimate Prince Bishop of Durham for 35 years. A number of different aspects of his background and his work as a bishop, as well as his longevity, combine to make him an interesting figure who in many ways ‘bridges’ the religious turmoil of the seventeenth century and the emergence of the modern church parties in the nineteenth century. He was also considerably engaged with the political and economic emergence of Britain as a global super-power, and with the rise of modern science. A biography of Barrington has never been written, but in 2025 Edward Carter used some sabbatical leave to research his life and times. This project drew upon previously unknown primary sources, which will be presented as part of this seminar.
Led by the Revd Canon Edward Carter.
Cost: £10 (plus a small booking fee if using TicketSource, or email NCCL). Please note payments are not refundable.
