Specialist conservation work to preserve Icon
28 Feb 2024

Specialist conservation work is being undertaken on an Icon at Norwich Cathedral this week.
The Icon - Descent in Hades by Patricia Fostiropoulos – is located at the east end of the Cathedral in the reliquary niche underneath the Bishop’s Throne.

The conservation work is being undertaken in situ by conservator Alice Tavares da Silva on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 February.
During this time visitors will be able to watch the conservation and cleaning process and gain an insight into this specialist work which is necessary to ensure the Icon is well preserved for the future.
The Icon dates from 1998 and depicts Christ flanked by saints (on his right David and Solomon; on his left Abel and John the Baptist) and raising Adam and Eve (representing humanity) from the inferno.
