Special journey to celebrate the arts

      11 May 2019

Festival-goers are being invited to take part in a special journey through Norwich Cathedral this Sunday as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. A Celebration of the Arts and Culture is the title of this year’s festival service which will travel through the centuries-old Cathedral and finish with refreshments in the Cloisters.

Along the way, the service will feature performances from Norwich Cathedral Choir and will use word, movement and song to reflect on the themes of journeys through the ages and the plight of refugees.

Readings will include John Ormond’s poem The Cathedral Builders, read by the Canon Precentor, the Revd Canon Aidan Platten, and WH Auden’s Refugee Blues, read by Norfolk & Norwich Festival director Daniel Brine.

The Revd Canon Aidan Platten said: “Our celebration uses some of the art continually resident in the Cathedral in its very stones together with music to draw together some of the stories of the Cathedral, its founders, and the city it serves.

We will hear about the journey of the stones, we will hear some of the journeys of the ancient Jewish people upon whose faith Christianity has its foundations.

We will consider too, those who in our own time flee their homes, arriving in our country, county and city as people have for centuries.”

A Celebration of the Arts and Culture Journeying Through the Cathedral will take place at 3.30pm on Sunday 12 May. All are welcome.
