A special service giving thanks for the 70-year reign of Her Majesty The Queen took place at Norwich Cathedral on Sunday. Hundreds of people attended the Platinum Jubilee Thanksgiving Service which brought the Cathedral’s Platinum Jubilee festivities to a close.

As he welcomed the congregation, the Revd Dr Peter Doll, the Cathedral’s Acting Dean, said: “Beloved in Christ, we have come together in this holy place to offer our worship, thanksgiving and praise, to hear and receive God’s holy word and to give thanks especially for the reign of our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth in this year of Platinum Jubilee. We give thanks for her faithful commitment to a life of service to this country and the Commonwealth, and we pray for her continued health and wisdom and the gift of the Holy Spirit as she serves God and her people.”

The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher, preached and Norwich Cathedral Choir, accompanied by the Cathedral organ and Norwich Cathedral Brass, sang music taken from the Coronation service, including Parry’s I was glad, Vaughan William’s Old Hundredth and Walton’s Coronation Te Deum.

Norwich Cathedral Children’s Choir sang We rejoice in your goodness God and readings were given by the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Dr Kevin Maguire, and The Lady Dannatt, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk.

The service concluded a busy four days of events at the Cathedral to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, including A Right Royal Family, a Battle of the Organs recital and a Platinum Jubilee Concert during which Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir and Norwich Baroque performed Handel’s famous Coronation Anthems.
