      New music society launched

      28 Feb 2022

Music has been at the heart of Norwich Cathedral for centuries and a new society aims to give everyone the chance to play a part in future musical opportunities. The Statham Society was launched during Evensong on Sunday 27 February.

The Statham Society, which has HRH The Earl of Wessex as its patron, was set up following on from the success of the They Shall Laugh and Sing Music Appeal and it is named after Heathcote Statham, Norwich Cathedral’s organist for nearly 40 years from 1928 to 1966.

Heathcote Statham (pictured in the centre of the image below) was a leading musical figure in the city for many years. Just as his legacy did so much for music in Norwich, so The Statham Society is intended to support the future of music and musical education at Norwich Cathedral for many years to come.

The society aims to raise funds to support the many musical projects that take place at Norwich Cathedral outside of the normal pattern of worship, including concerts, recordings, commissioning of new music and choir tours, and ongoing education opportunities for the children in our choirs.

Music supporters can join the Statham Society for as little at £10 a month and in return members are sent a newsletter every term, given advance notice of performances and priority booking, and invited to exclusive behind the scenes events.

Members can join by taking out a monthly or annual subscription or life membership. They can also make a one-off gift or even leave a legacy.

Find out more by downloading the Statham Society leaflet here or email the society’s administrator, Les West, at stathamsociety@cathedral.org.uk

      Your membership will help fund:

      • concert performances at Norwich Cathedral

      • Cathedral Choir tours and performances at other locations

      • recording projects by the Cathedral Choir and Organists

      • educational music opportunities for the Cathedral’s choristers and members of Norwich Cathedral Children’s Choir

      • additional financial support for girl choristers in individual need
