New Lay Canon - Stephen Holt

      20 Nov 2024

Retired judge Stephen Holt has been welcomed as a lay canon of Norwich Cathedral.

He fell in love with the Cathedral while serving as Recorder of Norwich – the most senior Crown Court judge.

“When I was sitting as a Judge I used to pop into Evensong. The choir is one of the best in the country and the ancient words and music were a huge relief and comfort after some of the evidence I had to listen to in court all day,” said Stephen.

He particularly loves the calmness and warmth of the Cathedral.

"Even in the depth of winter I always have this inner warm glow when I leave the Cathedral.

I think the ancient stones have absorbed the calmness and warmth of those who have worked and worshipped there over the centuries."

He said he had been overwhelmed to be asked to become a lay canon.

"It is a huge honour and responsibility to take even a tiny role in the history over 900 years of Christian worship in such a beautiful and well-run Cathedral.

“I am looking forward to putting something back into a building I have grown to love along with supporting the wonderful people who work there.”

The Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Andrew Braddock said:

“We are delighted that His Honour Stephen Holt is being made a lay canon of Norwich Cathedral. He brings extensive legal knowledge, practical wisdom and a love for the Cathedral and its role in the life of the city, county and diocese.

Stephen takes up this appointment at the same time as becoming a member of the Cathedral Chapter – the Cathedral’s governing body. I very much look forward to working with him in the years ahead.”

Stephen, who grew up in Northumbria, lives near Ranworth, where he enjoys spending time on the Broads.

“We have a 60-year-old wooden boat which we keep at Ranworth and enjoy gardening, walking our dogs and entertaining and feeding family and old friends,” he said.

The ordained and lay canons of Norwich Cathedral, together with the archdeacons and suffragan bishops, make up the College of Canons, which meets to help the cathedral and diocese work together to serve the people of Norfolk and Waveney.

Stephen Holt, retired Recorder of Norwich, was welcomed as an honorary canon of Norwich Cathedral at Evensong on Monday November 18.
