Norwich Cathedral Choir brought the sublime sound of Bach’s musical masterpiece St John Passion to the Cathedral at the weekend.
Accompanied by Norwich Baroque and a cast of internationally- acclaimed soloists, the Cathedral Choir sang the monumental work on Saturday 23 March.
It is a special anniversary year for the sacred oratorio which was first performed 300 years ago in Leipzig, Germany, on Good Friday 1724, and it has remained one of the most revered musical settings of the Passion narrative.
Ashley Grote, Norwich Cathedral’s Master of Music, who conducted the concert, said: “It was very special to perform Bach’s St John Passion exactly 300 years on from its first performance in 1724.
“Bach’s dramatic setting of the Passion story remains as fresh today as it did then, resonating with our own human emotions and experiences."
The soloists singing in the concert were James Gilchrist (Evangelist), Jamie W Hall (Christus), Cressida Sharp (Soprano), Jessica Gillingwater (Alto), David de Winter (Tenor) and Andrew Tipple (Bass).
