All are welcome to join us in celebrating the installation of the new Dean of Norwich at Norwich Cathedral.

It was announced by Downing Street in September last year that the Revd Canon Dr Andrew Braddock was to become the 40th Dean of Norwich after Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved the appointment.

Canon Andrew, 51, the Interim Dean of Gloucester, will officially begin his new role at the helm of Norwich Cathedral during a special service at the Cathedral at 2pm on Saturday 28 January.

The service is open to all and it will also be live-streamed on the Norwich Cathedral Services YouTube Channel.

It is a welcome return to Norfolk for Canon Andrew who spent his first ten years of public ministry in the Diocese of Norwich.

Ordained in Norwich Cathedral in 1998, he served his curacy in the parishes of Ranworth with Panxworth, Woodbastwick, South Walsham and Upton. In 2001, Andrew was appointed Rector of Cringleford and Colney, taking up the additional role of Rural Dean of Humbleyard in 2004.

In 2008, Andrew was appointed Diocesan Missioner in the Diocese of Gloucester and, in 2013, he became Canon Missioner of Gloucester Cathedral and Diocesan Director of Mission and Ministry. Andrew was commissioned as Interim Dean of Gloucester in April 2022.

Canon Andrew, pictured above being fitted for the historic Birkbeck Cope ahead of the Installation Service, said: “It is a great joy, privilege and responsibility to take up the role of Dean of Norwich. In testing times Norwich Cathedral is a beacon of Christian faith and hope. I look forward to getting to know the Cathedral community and the wider community as, inspired by God’s love, we seek to serve the city, county and diocese.”

The Revd Canon Aidan Platten, the current Acting Dean of Norwich, said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming Andrew and his family to the Cathedral. He is a man of great warmth and comes to us with much experience of cathedral ministry from his time in Gloucester. He will bring vision, energy and enthusiasm to his role as together we seek to serve within the City and County and the Diocese of Norwich.”

Canon Andrew is married to Victoria and they have two teenage children.

Canon Andrew’s appointment follows the retirement of the Very Revd Jane Hedges, the 39th Dean of Norwich, in May 2022.

Norwich Cathedral will be closed to general visitors from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 28 January to allow the installation of the new Dean of Norwich to take place. All are welcome to attend and the Cathedral will open at 1pm for those attending the service.
